About this Report
There were many “firsts” in the first quarter of 2014: FIFA World Cup Soccer spam scams appeared; CYREN partner, PhishLabs observed a new wave of phishing attacks using residential IP address space and personal computers to install and host phishing sites; and Western Europe led the spam pack for the first time in a while collectively generating more than ¼ of the world’s spam.
But for those of you not ready for this much change, fear not; the outlaws of the Internet continued to use their tried and true methods for scamming the public. With the release of its new phishing feed, CYREN analysts observed a 73% increase in the number of phishing URLs/sites related to PayPal. Spam topics continued along the same themes with a 45% increase in pharmaceutical spam compared to the 4th quarter of 2013.
