About this Report

Cyren examined 2.7 million emails that were classified as clean by their existing email security systems and delivered to user mailboxes. Solutions tested ranged from hosted email services with included security filtering to on-premises email security gateways.

The study was conducted in 2018 and revealed that, on average, 7.2% of email delivered to users after being scanned by their current email security solution was spam, phishing, or  contained malware. The report summarizes the results, including those for five separate cases using the same security solution, which illustrate the inconsistency of protection provided.

Questions answered by this report:

  • What is the average rate of “unwanted” email that current email security solutions fail to stop?
  • Based on the percentages from the companies tested, how many phishing and malware emails might be reaching users at my company?
  • How widely might the “miss rate” vary across different companies, even those using the same solution?
  • Of malware being delivered to users, what percentage was previously known, and how much is new, previously unknown viruses, worms, ransomware and such?
  • How can I assess my company’s email security effectiveness?
